What is MQW?

MQW. The multi-quantum well (MQW) solver is a 1D physics-based solver for calculating optical and electronic properties of multi-quantum well stacks

A Laser structure with a very thing (about 10 nm) Layer of bulk Semiconductor material sandwich between the two barrier regions of a higher bandgap material; this restricts the motion of the electrons and holes and forces energies for motion to be quantized and only occur at discrete energies.

Quantum well lasers have active regions of about 100 thick, which restricts the motion of the carriers (electrons and holes) in a direction normal to the well. This results in a set of discrete energy levels and the density of states is modified to a two-dimensional-like density of states.

By adjusting the composition and thickness of the various layers in the laser structure, the wavelength of the emitted light can be controlled. This makes strained quantum well lasers ideal for use in optical communication systems, where specific wavelengths are used to transmit information over long distances.
