Here we discuss where such noise can come from, how it is quantified and how its influences can be minimized. Noise of lasers is a short term for random fluctuations of various output parameters.

The noise issues of lasers are due to the competition of mode in laser resonant cavity, which lead to high frequency jitter of output power. Through special design for laser resonant cavity and other components, the laser amplitude noise can be reduce efficiently.

What are the different types of laser noise?

In a single-frequency laser, there are intensity noise (or amplitude noise) and phase noise. The latter causes a finite laser linewidth, and is strongly related to frequency noise.

We reduce the intensity noise of laser light by using an electro-optic modulator and acousto-optic modulator in series. The electro-optic modulator reduces noise at high frequency (10 kHz to 1 MHz), while the acousto-optic modulator sets the average power of the light and reduces noise at low frequency (up to 10 kHz).
