Fiber Coupled Diode Laser

It is convenient to couple the output of a laser diode into an optical fiber in order to deliver the light to the place. Fiber-coupled diode lasers have several advantages:

The light exiting the fiber has a circular and smooth intensity profile and a symmetric beam quality. It becomes possible to remove the laser diodes together with their cooling arrangements.
Defective fiber-coupled diode lasers can easily be replaced without changing the alignment of the device. It can be easily combined with other fiber-optic components.

Fiber lasers can have active regions several kilometers long, and so can provide very high optical gain. They can support kilowatt levels of continuous output power because of the fiber's high surface area to volume ratio, which allows efficient cooling.
