Erbium Laser

LIDAR is a surveying technology that measures distance by illuminating a target with a laser light. Lidar exists as an acronym of Light Detection And Ranging, and was originally created as a portmanteau of "light" and "radar".  Lidar is popularly used as a technology to make high-resolution maps, with applications in geodesy, geomatics, archaeology, geography, geology, geomorphology, seismology, forestry, atmospheric physics, airborne laser swath mapping (ALSM) and laser altimetry. What is known as Lidar is sometimes simply referred to as laser scanning or 3D scanning, with terrestrial, airborne and mobile applications.

Erbium laser resurfacing is designed to remove surface-level and moderately deep lines and wrinkles on the face, hands, neck, or chest. One of the benefits of erbium laser resurfacing is minimal burning of surrounding tissue. This laser causes fewer side effects -- such as swelling, bruising, and redness -- so your recovery time should be faster than with CO2 laser resurfacing. In some cases, recovery may only take one week Ask your doctor how long recovery is likely to take for you.  If you have a darker skin tone, erbium laser resurfacing may work better for you.

Er:YAG lasers are solid-state lasers whose lasing medium is erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet.  Er:YAG lasers typically emit light with a wavelength of 2940 nm, which is infrared light. Unlike Nd:YAG lasers, the output of an Er:YAG laser is strongly absorbed by water. This fact limits the use of this laser in surgery, and in many other laser applications where water is present. Because of this limitation, Er:YAG lasers are far less common than their relatives such as Nd:YAG lasers.

Erbium lasers are powerful ablative lasers. It can be designed to remove the outer layers of skin using a burst of energy. Laser resurfacing has advantages over other methods of resurfacing, including less bleeding, more precision with the ability to target tiny areas like moles, and most important for many people, a shorter recovery time. Patients who have had Erbium laser treatments recover twice as quickly as those who have had CO2 laser treatments. There is little burning of surrounding tissues.  Side effects may include swelling, redness and bruising but this lasts for just a week. The dramatic resurfacing results this laser treatment yields may last up to five years!

Lasers are not all alike. The Erbium laser is useful in eradicating mild to moderate wrinkles caused by sun damage, as compared to wrinkles that are a result of facial expressions. Acne scars and scars caused by surgery or trauma, age or liver spots, and both epidermal (surface) and dermal (subsurface) lesions may be treated. This type of laser works wonders on darker skin types because it is less likely to cause hypopigmentation or lightening of the skin. Facial skin is the most suitable area of the body for treatment because of the abundance of dermal glands.

Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier & CW Laser, The goal of this project is to construct a high power fiber laser using double-clad fiber co-doped with erbium and ytterbium. Then to optimize the fiber laser, altering the length of the gain medium and the output coupling ratio to maximize output power.
