Protecting Your Eyes From Laser Pointers

by Administrator | post a comment

How laser pointer eye injuries occur

Laser pointers are a very important device used by business people to point out information on a flow chart or graph, and it can be very amusing when your cat chases them in circles on the floor. But, as harmless as they may appear, even some of the weakest of laser pointers can damage they eye if exposure occurs for a given length of time.

Visual disturbances and retinal or corneal damage can result from exposure to a laser pointer. It may not seem serious, however eye protection may be a necessity to avoiding injuries that may result from over exposure to a laser pointer. There is nothing comical about vision loss caused by a laser pointer, so handling with caution and using them only as intended, is very important.

Proper safety eyewear especially prescription eyewear will have the ability to filter away the laser wavelengths and will protect the eye. Many businesses have banned the use of laser pointers because of the hazards they pose, especially around small children. Most agencies recommend that small children not be allowed to handle or play with laser pointers, because there is a real threat and nothing fun. Many schools will not allow them to be used specifically as a result.

Safety is the message and protecting your eyes and never looking directly into a laser pointer is critical for protection of your eyes. Be aware of the direction the laser pointer is pointing in, and never point it at another person. Point it only at the flow chart or graph and if it is not being used for this reason, then turn it off. There have been relative incidents of adults suffering permanent injuries as a result of a laser pointer, but the possibility does exist, particularly with the higher-powered laser pointers.

Be careful and be aware of the hazards and use eyewear protection. Follow the safety guidelines and use the laser only for its designated purpose. Your eyes will thank you for it later.
